For anyone lucky enough to venture deep into the sousterrain of Maison Blanche, one of the unique highlights – among all the amazing, but very poignant artifacts and graffiti, is the letter box that was carved by two soldiers, Private W.P. Beckett (#802293) and Private T. Mason (#796610) of the 1f5th Battalion.

The Letter Box is not far from one of the openings and would have been used by men as they prepared to head into battle. As the story is told, men would deposit their letters to loved ones at home and they would be collected and sent off in the chance that they were killed. If they survived the coming battle their letter would be retrieved. . . until next time.
