The story of Nicholas Way was fascinating both from the telling and from the research. Even after recounting his path to the Front and his death near Regina Trench there are so many questions left unanswered – his abandonment of his wife and children when he left for Canada in 1913 and the subsequent abandonment of his children by their mother in 1917, a year after his death, to name just two.
Researching the story, however, was equally interesting and an important learning process. It was the first time that I used City Directories in uncovering a life. These revealed Way’s employment with the Crescent Creamery Company, as well as detail on where he lived and with whom.
These are all details that beg to be captured in another story about Life at the Front.
