Circumstances of Death

“Died of Wounds” (Fractured base of skull, self inflicted) at No.3 Casualty Clearing Station. Court of Enquiry convened in the Field to enquire into circumstances of this casualty found that Gunner Boardman met his death by his own act and that he alone was to blame”.

He was brought from Bailthul on 15-10-15 (under arrest for absence without leave) and whilst in confinement in an upstairs room of a convent (used as billets) at about 8.30 a.m. the next day leaped out of the window, fatally injuring himself. According to his own statement to the Medical Orderly the day previous, he suffered from hereditary insanity.
